As one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, BOTOX® injections can be both preventative and corrective. The key to a natural—and not “frozen”—look is in the hands of the injector. Our experienced facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jess Prischmann, uses a “microdroplet” technique for her injections. By placing small droplets in very selective locations, Dr. Prischmann can achieve excellent results while using the fewest number of units. Dr. Prischmann strongly believes that every patient deserves an individualized treatment plan.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable drug designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Derived from a diluted form of botulinum toxin type A, BOTOX® Cosmetic works by temporarily preventing muscles from contracting. Since repetitive muscle contraction contributes to the development of facial wrinkles and lines, the solution’s ability to relax these muscles can ultimately lead to a smoother, more youthful, and more refreshed appearance. With customized treatment from an experienced and qualified injector such as Dr. Prischmann, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic can appear very natural and patients can avoid a “frozen” look.
What are the benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic offers an array of advantages for both women and men who would like to renew their appearance, including:
- Noticeable reduction in signs of fine lines and creases
- Non-surgical option for facial rejuvenation that does not require excessive recovery time
- The treatment is an “in-office” procedure that can often be performed in less than 15 minutes
During your initial consultation with Dr. Prischmann, she will determine if you are a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic. If BOTOX® Cosmetic is the right option for your needs, Dr. Prischmann will develop a customized treatment plan that can rejuvenate your appearance with results that look natural.
Am I a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Ideal candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic are typically individuals who have:
- Mild/moderate forehead lines
- Mild/moderate frown lines
- Mild/moderate crow’s feet
- “Bunny” lines*
- Chin dimpling*
- Lines/creases in other select locations*
- Enlarged Masseter (jaw) muscles*
- Platysmal (neck) bands*
- Patients seeking subtle brow lift*
- Gummy smile*
*Using botulinum toxin in areas other than the forehead, glabella, and crow’s feet is considered “off-label.”
The best candidates do not have deep wrinkles at rest and do not have neuromuscular diseases. Patients who are pregnant or nursing are not candidates for this procedure. Dr. Prischmann can help you determine whether you are a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic during the initial consultation. She can also recommend other treatment options if this procedure is not ideal for your needs.
What does the BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure involve?
Dr. Prischmann will precisely identify the best injection locations based on your treatment plan. The targeted injections of the BOTOX® Cosmetic solution will be performed utilizing a “microdroplet” technique with a very small needle. The total number of injections varies from one patient to another, based on each individual’s needs and goals. It is very important to note that the effects of BOTOX® injections are not immediate. In fact, results can take two to seven days to become apparent.
What can I expect during recovery from BOTOX® Injections?
There is minimal downtime associated with BOTOX® injections. Swelling and injection site redness usually subside in less than an hour. Bruising is variable and can sometimes last for several days. Headaches can occur and usually resolve within 24 hours after treatment. Most patients are able to return to normal daily routines following the treatment.
What can I expect from the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Results following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment can typically be seen as early as 48 hours. Full effects can generally be apparent 7 to 14 days following injection. This is usually when we have patients come in for a “touch-up,” so we can make sure the results look natural. The effects of BOTOX® injections typically last about three to four months, and can often be maintained with occasional follow-up treatments when they begin to fade.
How much does BOTOX® Cosmetic cost?
The cost of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment varies from patient to patient. This is because some patients only treat one area of the face, while others treat three or more areas of the face. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a drug and is dosed based on the number of “units” each patient needs.
Dr. Prischmann customizes the treatment for each patient. She typically starts with the lowest possible dose to achieve the desired effect. The average price of BOTOX® Cosmetic at our practice generally ranges from $350 to $560. Our practice accepts a wide range of payment methods, and we work with CareCredit®, a healthcare and
plastic surgery financing agency.
Additional BOTOX® Cosmetic Frequently Asked Questions
What areas of my face can I get BOTOX® Cosmetic injected?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved for use in the forehead, crow’s feet, and lines between the eyebrows (also known as the “11s”). All other areas are considered “off-label.” Having said that, Dr. Prischmann feels BOTOX® Cosmetic can safely be used for “bunny lines,” lip lines, chin dimpling, relaxing a gummy smile, softening the jawline, and platysmal bands. Dr. Prischmann often uses BOTOX® Cosmetic for relaxing the masseter muscle and finds that this can also provide pain relief to patients who clench their jaws.
Sometimes, we will place a very small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic around the lips for vertical lip lines. However, our practice does not use BOTOX® Cosmetic freely in this area. This is to retain a natural appearance and to avoid smile asymmetry.
What are the qualifications required by practitioners to perform BOTOX® Cosmetic injections?
To our knowledge, in the state of Minnesota, there are no qualifications or education requirements needed to perform BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. In our practice, our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jess Prischmann, is the only one who performs injections. We believe this is safer for the patient.
How can I avoid side effects after BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?
It is best to start conservatively with all injectables. This can be one of the best ways to reduce your risk of side effects.
I am a younger patient considering BOTOX® Cosmetic. Does age affect the frequency of administration?
Dr. Prischmann believes it is important to start with the lowest possible dose of BOTOX® Cosmetic for all of her patients, not just the younger ones.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectables have only been used for cosmetic purposes in this country since the early 2000s. While the 10-year studies on safety are good, there is no way to know what the long-term effects of these products will be. That is why it is best to stick with the lowest effective dose for the longest period of time.
What is Jeuveau™? How does it differ from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Jeuveau™ is the newest neurotoxin to enter the US market. Launched in mid-2019, Jeuveau™ is FDA approved for frown lines. Jeuveau™ is produced in South Korea and distributed by a US company. We have used Jeuveau™ since its launch and have found the results to be comparable to BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®. During your consultation, we will review all three options and help you decide which product is best for you.
